Ingenuity and hard work run in the family, and Santee Cooper and Camp Hall are proving that.
Santee Cooper is South Carolina’s state-owned electric and water utility, and it’s the driving force and developer behind the new commerce park, Camp Hall. Santee Cooper was conceived and executed as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal.
Specifically, the establishment of Santee Cooper lighted up rural South Carolina and put people back to work. It brought much-needed electricity and prosperity to some of the state’s poorest regions.
Construction of the Santee Cooper Project began in 1939 and employed around 15,000 workers at its peak. The project was accelerated in 1941 when FDR declared it a defense project to help the war effort. Thousands of tourists from across the U.S. witnessed the massive undertaking that not only was the largest land-clearing project in the country’s history, but also created at that time the largest single-lift lock in the world. Santee Cooper first produced electricity in 1942 at what is now called Jefferies Hydroelectric Station near Moncks Corner.
Since its inception, Santee Cooper has been serving the people and industries of South Carolina through reliable, low-cost electricity and water, and economic development efforts. Santee Cooper brings that legacy of strength and ingenuity to the development of Camp Hall.
Camp Hall is unique because of its first-of-its-kind, master-planned industrial workspace that combines commerce, workforce amenities and environmental sustainability – all in a location with access to deep-water and inland ports, interstates and railways.
