Site Selection For Data Centers

In our modern world, technology and connectivity are at the center of everything we do, in business and in daily life. That constant connectivity to serve people, products and services builds a high demand for data centers to house critical applications and data.

The data industry has become an essential one in the current state of business. IT operations are critical to the success of a business, and the need for data storage and uninterrupted power have become two necessities to maintain a connected, secure and thriving ecosystem for the business to function.

But, while data centers bring to mind large rooms full of servers, routers, switches, storage systems and more, there’s a unique location necessary for running such operations at an optimal and reliable level. In the current technologically advanced world, it’s less about having the data center in close proximity to business headquarters, and more important to consider the unique needs of the center itself.

Here are a couple things to consider when scouting data center locations:

Utilities and infrastructure

These types of projects are already expensive and include the need for an immense amount of power and security. Increased construction costs above normal should be a top factor for business owners to avoid. Availability of telecommunications infrastructure, especially diverse and redundant power and fiber connection, is a primary consideration for efficiently and effectively creating a new industrial space for data center activity.

Workforce availability and quality of life

Having an industrial space that’s convenient for commuting, and also boasts access to a thriving workforce, has the potential to attract premier employees for top-notch business. When the center also happens to be located near a major market, there are more opportunities to provide an improved quality of life for residents, meaning people may be more attracted to working with a company because the area supports a well-rounded life for diverse people and interests. This also helps with retention of a workforce. Housing availability, education, healthcare and recreational activities are top considerations for how people measure the quality of life for themselves and their families.
