3 Benefits of Walking During Your Workday
Camp Hall
The productivity and happiness of employees is greatly affected by their opportunity to do two things: connect with themselves and others, and have the space to balance work and life. Wellness is beneficial in your personal life, but it’s also essential for your professional experience.
You know that exercise will make you healthier, but did you know that being active during the day, even in small increments, has positive effects on your mind, mood and performance, too?
When you’re contemplating whether to check off one more thing on your to-do list or to get outside for a break, opt for the outdoor activity when you can, and here’s why:
Physical activity improves happiness
In a study published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, researchers observed the difference in mood, energy, fatigue, appetite, stress and cognitive function between workers who were sedentary for six hours at a time and those who took walking breaks.
While stress levels and cognitive function didn’t change significantly between groups, the study found that when the workers walked during the workday, either in frequent short breaks or a longer walk before work, they reported increased happiness than they felt during their sedentary sessions.
Movement throughout the day decreases fatigue and cravings
In the same study, the volunteers reported more energy and less food cravings with daily activity rather than six hours of sedentary work.
In the same vein, walking increases body circulation, which is naturally energizing and can lead to more improvements in health and wellness. Making the beneficial choice to take part in physical activity leads to making other positive choices and forming new habits. That means when you choose to be healthier by being more active, you’re more likely to choose not to overindulge at meals or with snacks and to work on healthier sleep routines.
Getting outside helps the mind rest and recover
Connecting with nature has many amazing benefits for the body, but the simplest is that it helps the mind to disconnect from its standard process during the workday and become reinvigorated by the experience of just being outdoors.
A study from the University of Miami found that the “presence of green space” and nature was associated with lower rates of heart disease. But the natural environment can also be attributed to resting cognitive processes, increasing focus and concentration, and allowing greater opportunity for creativity.
As a next generation commerce park, Camp Hall is committed to connecting people, nature and productivity. One of the ways it does this is through its 15+ miles of multi-use trails that employees can use for morning bike rides, afternoon walks and simply engaging with nature.
These trails connect to the heart of Camp Hall, the Village Center, which, among other conveniences, is also planned to have an event lawn, a playfield and other outdoor places to gather. Work-life balance is a priority at this modern commerce park, and providing ample outdoor space for recreation is a significant focus to benefit the many workers that will be employed throughout Camp Hall’s campuses.
