Workers at Volvo Cars literally sign off on the SC plant’s new EV
Volvo Cars hasn’t yet started delivering its all-electric EX90 SUV to customers, but one of the first to roll off the South Carolina assembly line has already found a home — the very place where it was built
Employees at the $1.2 billion manufacturing plant in Ridgeville recently got the chance to put their John Hancocks on a brand-new EX90 to commemorate this month’s production kickoff of the carmaker’s newest vehicle.
“We’ve been in celebration mode since announcing the EX90 start of production in early July,” the automaker stated on its LinkedIn page. “Over the last two weeks, team members had an opportunity to make their mark on one of the very first EX90s …”
Volvo also posted a Facebook video of employees putting their signatures to a light-colored EX90.
The battery-powered vehicle will be displayed at the plant off Interstate 26 in Berkeley County. Customers are expected to get their EX90s later this year.
Volvo previously announced that the first SUV rolled off the production line on June 5. The seven-seater has a range of up to 300 miles per charge and includes new safety technology that can detect obstructions even on dark, unmarked roads and monitor driver fatigue.
It has a list price starting at $77,990, including destination charges.
The EX90 is the first all-electric model to be built at the Lowcountry plant, which will build the Polestar 3 battery-powered SUV later this year for Volvo’s sister brand.
Volvo halted production of the S60 sedan in South Carolina in late June. All told, the factory has the capacity to build up to 150,000 vehicles per year.
